Winter Programme of Talks and Social Evenings.

The winter programme meetings are held on Friday evenings at the Friends' Meeting House, Hill Street, Coventry. Refreshments are available. Non-members are welcome.

The programme of winter meetings usually starts in October and traditionally the first meeting takes the form of a Member's Exhibition when members bring along items or specimens of interest - from a single item to a table-top display. The final meeting in December is usually an occasion for members to show their slides and for pre-Christmas socialising. In addition, a member's social event is held annually on an evening in March.

Summer Programme of Walks and Visits.

The Society meets at approximately fortnightly intervals throughout the year. During the summer period Saturday afternoon (and occasional week-day evening) field meetings and walks are held at various sites of interest, mostly within Warwickshire and West Midlands, but occasionally further afield. During June, which is probably the best time to see the widest variety of wild-flowers, the walks are usually held at weekly intervals.

Additional activities

Additional activities are organised by the specialist sections. Generally the sectional meetings are held for the purpose of recording the natural history of particular sites. Apply to the section secretaries for details.

John Joseph Ward

John Joseph Ward, a freelance naturalist/photographer, was a founder-member of this Society. The Society is currently researching his life and work.

Tile Hill Wood Nature Reserve

Coventry Natural History Society's direct involvement with Tile Hill Wood began in 1930 when Coventry City Council designated it a nature reserve. The Society was given the responsibility for recording the flora and fauna of the wood and to do this it provided a group of specialist 'recorders' and 'watchers' who were given permits to enter the wood at any time in order to carry out this work. The recording work was initially of a general nature and concentrated on the botany, entomology and bird life, but over the years there have been a number of more extensive studies of particular sections of the fauna and flora. The results of these investigations are published from time to time in the Society's annual "Proceedings". For further details see - Tile Hill Wood Nature Reserve - a brief history.

The Society's publications

The Society's journal "Proceedings of the Coventry & District Natural History & Scientific Society", is no longer published. The Society has also published a book "The Coventry District - a Naturalist's Guide".
